There are about 20,000 species of bee in the World.
There are 3 different types of bee in each colony – Queen, Drones, Workers.
Bees have 2 stomachs. One for eating and the other for storing nectar.
Bees have 5 eyes (all the better for seeing you with). 2 compound eyes and 3 ocelli.
It takes about 2 million flowers to make 1 pound of honey.
The average life of a honeybee is 3-6 weeks.
Bees buzz because they beat their wings incredibly fast – about 200 beats a second.
Bees have been here for around 30 million years. When I say here, I don’t mean at St Dominic’s, I mean on Earth.
The bee is the only insect that produces food eaten by people.
Brrrrrr!!! This cold and wet weather is not good to go buzzing around in. We can go oit between the rain showers and collect pollen, but there is not much nectar to be collected as it is so cold.
With this bad weather the bee keeper needs to make sure the bees have enough food and therefore we need to mix sugar with water to make a syrup and feed to the bees.
When the weather warms up the bees will be thinking of swarming. This is their natural method of increasing the number of colonies. The queen bee will decide when to swarm and take with her the older bees who will have filled their tummies with nectar from the hive. They will all fly away to find a new home, leaving the young bees with a queen cell or two in the hive to start a new colony.
Let us know if you see a swarm of bees.
